CQ NEWS (Press Release - July 1st). Doug Zwiebel, KR2Q, Named Director
of CQ World Wide DX Contest (Hicksville, NY) -- Longtime CQ World Wide
DX Contest Committee member Doug Zwiebel, KR2Q, has been named Director
of the CQ World Wide DX Contest, CQ magazine Publisher Dick Ross, K2MGA,
announced today. Doug succeeds Randy Thompson, K5ZD, who has been CQWW
Director for the past four years. The CQWW DX Contest is amateur radio's
most popular contest and may be the world's largest competitive sporting
event in terms of numbers of participants.
Zwiebel is the longest-serving member of the CQWW Contest Committee,
having first joined in 1979. He brought the contest into the computer
age by writing the first mass log-checking program (using Business BASIC)
in 1980, and has devoted thousands of hours of volunteer time to the
contest community. Doug was also responsible for suggesting the establish-
ment of the CQ Contest Hall of Fame in 1986.
First licensed in 1966, Zwiebel began contesting a year later and has
never stopped. Over the years, he has operated at some of the nation's
top contest superstations, including K2GL (where he was chief 10-meter
operator for a decade), K5NA and N2RM. He has operated primarily low
power from his home station and holds six CQWW QRP records, more than
any other active station. He also holds DXCC Honor Roll #1 and has worked
more than 250 DX entities using less than one watt of transmitter power.
Professionally, Zwiebel is a hospital administrator in New York City.
He and his wife live in Randolph, New Jersey. They have two adult daugh-
ters, both of whom are doctors.
CQ Publisher Dick Ross, K2MGA, said Zwiebel brings a unique perspective
to the table. 'Doug has operated from some of the world's top contest
superstations as well as single-operator QRP,' Ross noted. 'So he under-
stands equally well the perspective of both the 'big guns' and the 'little
pistols,' without whom the contest could not be nearly as successful as
it is. I look forward to working closely with Doug.'

REALTIME BAND CONDITIONS WEB SITE <www.bandconditions.com>:
The purpose of this experimental Web site is to provide 24-7-365 actual
(REALTIME) band condition information to CW QRPp, QRPe and CW/SSB for
Contesters interested in increasing their scores. It can also be of
benefit to other Radio Amateurs to determine band conditions for Nets
and casual QSO's. This information is NOT based on any software pre-
dictions or any kind of satellite based readings. It is based on a
new Ionospheric sounding method called 'HF Ionospheric Interferometry'
which operates very similarly to the PolSAR system used by NASA.

RI1, FRANZ JOSEF LAND. QSL Manager Victor, UA2FM, reported on QRZ.com,
on July 2nd, 'Eugeny, RI1FJ (aka UA4RX), suddenly showed up on the air
late June. I have no e-mail communication with the Island, as there are
no post/telephone/transportation services there, but company satellite
forbidden for private use. I was neither notified by Eugeny of his QRV,
nor about problems he had during this season. The only thing I know, -
it's him who signs RI1FJ, as many hams worked him reported this. I do not
know whether Eugeny is able to send his ADIF logs through his <@winlink.org>
address as we did in his previous operations. I was told all steel and
metal materials and equipment was removed from the island before summer
2015. Perhaps this was the reason of RI1FJ silence. Gents, please keep
working RI1FJ on the bands, but be patient with QSL requests until I
establish log exchange procedure. I'll be back with more information as
soon I have it..... Thanks, Victor UA2FM'
ADDED NOTE: Eugeny seems to be working mainly 20 meters CW and RTTY.
Times of activity have been between 0651-0705z, 1130-1330z, 1238-1820z
and 2015-0445z. QSL via UA2FM, direct, OQRS or LoTW.

T40HQ on all bands. Current list of operators are Juan/CO2JD, Amed/CO2AME,
Bob/CM2KL, Reynaldo/CO6RD, Ed/CO7EH, Ra=FAl/CO8ZZ and Oriol/CO8CY. QSL via
OH2TA.
