Contesters interested in increasing their scores. It can also be of
benefit to other Radio Amateurs to determine band conditions for Nets
and casual QSO's. This information is NOT based on any software pre-
dictions or any kind of satellite based readings. It is based on a
new Ionospheric sounding method called 'HF Ionospheric Interferometry'
which operates very similarly to the PolSAR system used by NASA.

QSLS RECEIVED VIA THE BUREAU: NONE REPORTED THIS WEEK!!!
SILENT KEY. Murray Adams WA4DAN, informs OPDX, 'It is with great sadness
that I must report that Gary Bartlett, VE1RGB, passed away Saturday evening
(July 22nd) surrounded by his loving family. Gary was an avid contester
and had participated in four Sable Island DXpeditions, including the 2013
CYOP and 2014 CY0C operations. Gary was a CW purist and had commented
many times that he didn't own a microphone. Gary was very instrumental
in providing logistical support for all of the recent CY0 DXpeditions.
He will be sorely missed by the Amateur Radio community, Contesters and
his CY0 DXpedition team mates'. OPDX and its readers would like to send
out our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of VE1RGB.
T41, CUBA. A large team of operators from the Pinar del Rio filial of the
FRC (Federaci=F3n de Radioaficionados de Cuba) will be active from Faro
Roncali (ILLW CU-0002) located in the most western point of the island,
during next ILLW using the callsign T41FR. The activity will be on all
HF bands using CW, SSB and PSK-31. QSL only via direct including SASE
to: P.O. BOX # 253, Pinar del Rio, 20100, Cuba.
T48, CUBA (LH Op). Look for a team of Cuban hams from coastal town of
Gibara in Holguin Province to operate during the International Lighthouse
and Lightship Week End [ILLW] (August 18-20th) as T48LHH from Punta Rasa
Lighthouse, 3 km North off Gibara. Activity will be 160/80/40/20/10/2
meters using CW, SSB and the Digital modes. Operators mentioned are CO8HH,
CO8YWK, CO8FS, CM8MLK, CM8AY, CL8CSV and possibly others.
V3, BELIZE. Robert, DL7VOA, and his XYL will be following the tracks of
the Maya in Central America with their final recreational stay in Belize.
Robert plans to be active as V34AO from Hopkins in Belize between November
18-30th. The QTH will be directly on the beach of Hopkins with every QSO
made viewing over the Caribbean Sea. As usual, operating will take place
in 'holiday style' mainly on CW during the local evening and night hours
(maybe some SSB, no digital). Robert will have his little Elecraft K2 with
him running 100 watts into a 10m fiberglass pole with vertical dipoles on
10/12/15/17/20m, ground-planes for 30m/40m or an Inverted L for 80m. He
will join the CQWW DX CW Contest (November 25-26th) as a Single-Op/All-
Band/Low-Power, with the only focus on having fun in pile-ups. He states,
'The contest weekend will be (mostly) mine, but during the rest of the
time please understand that during day time there are other important
holiday activities to be undertaken with my wife like relaxing, snorkeling,
flying my drone, etc. instead of conducting a 100% DXpedition (which
does not mean that I never show up on the bands during day time). I already
have a license for the regular callsign V31EO, but I have also applied
for the short term special callsign V34AO, and I am very optimistic that
it will be issued to me as well. Depending on the limitations I am planning
to use the special call V34AO not only during the CQWW CW Contest, but
also throughout my stay.' All information (including a link with exact
GPS coordinates and maybe later also some drone videos) can be found on
the Web site: www.qrz.com/db/dl7voa
QSLs for both V34AO (or V31EO) are via DL7VOA, by the Bureau or direct.
V4, ST. KITTS AND NEVIS (Update/On the Bird). John, V47JA/W5JON, reports
that his FT857 failed yesterday (July 23rd) during a SO-50 pass when he
was about to call N8HM. He will be looking to borrow a UHF receiver from
someone on the island to get back on SO-50. He will also be returning to
St. Kitts in October if that fails.
VK9X & VK9C, CHRISTMAS AND COCOS (KEELING) ISLANDS (Update). Operators
Peter/VK3FN, Chris/VK3FY, Lee/VK3GK, Luke/VK3HJ, Tony/VK3TZ and David/K3LP
will activate both Christmas Island (OC-002) and Cocos (Keeling) Island
(OC-003) in the month of October 2017. The team will start on Christmas
Island as VK9XI between October 3-10th. During this time, they will be
active during the Oceania DX SSB Contest (October 7-8th). The team will
then move to Cocos (Keeling) Island and be active as VK9CI between October
10-17th. During this time, they will be active during the Oceania DX CW
Contest (October 14-15th). For activity outside of the contest, operators
will be active on 160-10 meters using CW, SSB and RTTY, plus they will be
running a 6m beacon. QSL via M0OXO - Bureau requests ONLY via M0OXO's OQRS.

The 65th annual convention is Sept. 15-16th, 2017. The ARRL has approved
the gathering as an 'Operating Specialty Convention' and league President
Rick Roderick, K5UR, will be the keynote speaker. Sponsored by the Northern
Illinois DX Association, W9DXCC will also offer Contest University and DX
University programs on Friday, with presentations for new and veteran
DXers and contest operators. The day long session on Saturday will feature
speakers, exhibits, QSL card checking and a CW pileup contest. The evening
banquet is a time to relax and enjoy our keynote speaker. For non-ham
family members, Woodfield Mall, which offers a wide array of shopping,

XT2, BURKINA FASO (Update). Harald, DF2WO, will once again be active as
XT2AW from Burkina Faso between September 28th and October 30th. Activity
will be holiday style on 40-10 meters using CW, SSB and the Digital modes.
He states that he works mostly on the Digital modes (PSK31, JT65 and RTTY)
and slow CW. Equipment is a FT-450D into a home-made HEX BEAM and a dipole
for 40 meters. QSL via M0OXO, direct or OQRS <www.m0oxo.com/oqrs/>.
