Last Minute Forecasts

I'm trying to piece together various bits of information regarding current band conditions so to make sense of it all. For example, today, August 9,2005 the K Index is either at 1, 2 0r 3 which tells me that conditions aren't too unsettled and there should be HF band activity. Well, there is absolutely NONE here so naturally I went up to the roof to see if my antenna was still connected!

Then I looked at Tomas' Last Minute Forecast and saw that the 9th was predicted to have very disturbed conditions. Now that seems to jive with what I'm experiencing on the bands today. I did order a book though Tomas' site on propagation so maybe I'll get a better grasp of it.
